It sounds to me like something else in your signal chain is not being managed well. I am making some generalized statements here without the full context of your specific music, but if you are not in a very niche genre I suspect you may turning knobs without really understanding why.

I don't take this as an attack. I've been mixing music for a living for 20 years, and believe me, I don't use any parameters for the sake of it.
For me, a compressor is a tool for controlling dynamics, but also for changing the sound envelope itself. A compressor that isn't for specific use should control:
Ratio, configurable attack and release times, threshold, and knee. If the knee isn't 100% configurable, at least a selection of hard and soft would be nice.
For me it's important, depending on the type of sound I'm working on in the track, that the compressor acts differently when applying the ratio and for that I need a knee setting.
Because the way a compressor works isn't just about being transparent, it's about achieving a purpose.
A clear example is the Ruper Neve Portico 5043. A compressor that sounds very nice but is hardly used due to its attack and release times.
For me, a compressor on a mixing console's channel strip should be configurable to achieve the desired result in any situation. And in this case, for me and my way of working, I need a knee setup.
