Dave,

However, in Military parlance..."NMRR" - that is, "No Manual Rewrite Required"!!
  • PS: That should "set" the record straight!

Yeah, I know. I've been using the term myself in music performance contexts for years. I was just acknowledging your pioneering spirit in introducing the term to the RML universe.

Dave,

You stated, "It's a DK special" ...and though I would love to take credit for the origination of this term, the following might be of use...[Click_Me]

"2. In popular music, a term used by musicians that refers to a portion of a live concert or dance. A standard set will often consist of 45 minutes of live music and a 15 minute break. Ensembles will often have a pre-determined list of songs that they will perform called a set list."

In many of the bands and duo settings that I was blessed to be a part of, the term
"set" was consistently employed. This was also the situation when working with my youngest daughter's Irish Dance Group - were the term "set" was also consistently employed.

Hope that the above will assist in clarifying things just a bit?

One of the terms just did not "sit" very well after I had been employing that term for a time.

Here is the final updated listing:

Audio file: A file type employed for use in digital audio for the purposes of 1) storage, 2) editing, or 3) playback of such data on a computer system.
Session: The means by which an audio file may be 1) created 2) edited, 3) stored, or 4) played back.
Set: A group of related Sessions.
Show: a) A set of sessions which can be opened and played back via Show Control mode in a playlist-style sequence or in any chosen order; b) The performance of such playback

Thanks again Dave for your suggestions...appreciated!
Nice. I only question the use of "Set" because it doesn't appear anywhere (that I know of) in the RML universe. It's a DK special. :)

Dave,

Yes, I did find some on your explanations very helpful and useful...thanks for this!

Following is an update:

Audio file: A file type employed for use in digital audio for the purposes of 1) storage, 2) editing, or 3) playback of such data on a computer system.
Session: The means by which an audio file may be 1) created 2) edited, 3) stored, or 4) played back.

Show: a) A set of sessions which can be opened and played back via Show Control mode in a playlist-style sequence or in any chosen order; b) The performance of such playback
  • Note: This information is relevant only in reference to RML Labs software.

A file isn't a format. :) The above could be the definition of WAF or AIFF, but not "audio file." How about...

A complete, self-contained unit of data formatted to store recorded sound, the contents of which can be played back or manipulated as needed.
[*]Session: The process by which digital audio data may be either 1) stored, or 2) launched.
A session isn't a process. :) How about...

a) a currently open and accessible set of audio data and editorial data therefor, ready for manipulation; in the case of a SAWStudio DAW, an EDL
b) any time period during which such a set is open and, usually, being manipulated
[*]Set: Consists of a group of related Sessions.
Strike "consists of" [FWIW, I don't think this term appears in the SAWStudio help file]
[*]Show: Consists of a group of sets to be performed in a playlist-style operation.
I haven't used Show mode, so I'm not sure, but my guess is that this is more accurate (correct me if I'm wrong):

Show: a) a set of sessions which can be opened and played back via Show Control mode in a playlist-style sequence or in any chosen order; b) the performance of such playback

Good day,

From my understanding, in documentation of a "technical nature" - each-and-every-thing should be named - as anything unnamed will have the propensity of being assumed...the latter of which is to be considered as a "No!...No!"

If this premise is true, then I am asking for your assistance in defining the following four terms namely, 1) audio file, 2) session, 3) set, and 4) show.

I will provide you with what I have derived thus far...then await your recommendations/suggestions.

  • Audio file: A file format for the storing or the playback of digital audio data on a computer system.
  • Session: The process by which digital audio data may be either 1) stored, or 2) launched.
  • Set: Consists of a group of related Sessions.
  • Show: Consists of a group of sets to be performed in a playlist-style operation.

Please let me know what you think and/or may suggest...

Thank for your assistance...appreciated as always!
