RME and Foobar

Good day,

I am attempting - rather unsuccessfully I might add, to get Foobar to pass audio to an HDSP9632.

At present, the output goes though the on-board audio device, but no signal is reaching the HDSP.

Note: In the SAC User Manual, page 26, it states, "If you have another multimedia soundcard as well as a high quality audio card, set the default playback device to the multimedia card for standard Windows audio playback."

In my normal situation, I would disable all other audio devices. However, would leaving the on-board audio device enabled not require a second output destination? I simply want to use
Foobar to play backing tracks during practice times.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You can set the default playback to the motherboard spdif out or speaker out and simply loop a physical cable back around to the RME spdif input or any line in inputs.

Always appreciated!

I will continue to use the SAC/SAW combo - as it what I so used to.

Dell, have you tried selecting the RME driver in Foobar2000? I'm using an old MBox2 Mini, and I can share it for playback between Foobar and SAWStudio.

The trick seems to be that Foobar uses MME drivers if you don't install the optional ASIO extension. I can happily alternate between Foobar and SAWStudio for playback. I can even play them back at the same time.

One caveat is that if Foobar changes the sample rate, when I go back to SAW, if it's supposed to playback at a different sample rate, it doesn't (at least with this driver). But a quick reset of the driver (e.g. open and save Options/Audio Device Setup) fixes that. Well, after a forced engine shutdown. Hopefully, the RME drivers are better in this regard. And they still support MME!

Thanks for the reply. And "Yes", I do use the ASIO add-on.

I have tried everything - and to no avail.

As I noted, the use of Foobar is merely a convenience, not a priority.
  • Getting my hear around TotalMixFX is consuming all my time at present.

As Bob suggested if you connect the motherboard SPDIF output to the SPDIF input on the RME card, you can run anything that would normally play through OS System (YouTube, WinAmp, Footer) through your SAC/SAW channels. They will show up as the last pair of inputs on the RME ASIO channel list.

This is literally a physical connection. On my 9652 card it says AEB1 IN/CDIN. There should be a 2pin header on your motherboard that says something like SPDIF Out (Or will be listed as a numbered connector with a corresponding listing in the user guide for the motherboard).

You're welcome.

Have you tried my approach? Just cuz you have the ASIO add-on doesn't mean you have to use it. You can choose an MME device output for playback (assuming there is an RME MME device).

But, yeah, Bob's/Philip's approach may be the most reliable.

Just for interest, I do not see those connections on the HDSP 9632.

This is what the manual states, "SPDIF - Connection to an internal CD-ROM drive with digital audio output. Allows for a direct transfer of digital audio data within the computer. Connection to SYNC OUT of another card. This internal SPDIF connection can be used to synchronize multiple cards with sample accuracy, and without the need for an external connection. The card of which SYNC OUT is used will be master, the SYNC IN one will be slave. SPDIF In / Internal has to be selected in the Settings dialog. Additionally Pref. Sync Ref has to be set to SPDIF In for this internal connection to work properly. Please note that the external SPDIF- or AES input can no longer be used."

In the pictures I've see the labels are on the back side of the card. The card only has one SPDIF input so If you use select/use the internal CDROM/SPDIF input then external one is not available for use.
