I don't know what tags are, but you should be seeing the track label text in the MT and the F, W, and Z Mixer views. Works over here on SS64 ver. 1.4.

Just a thought - Maybe you're looking at the track names as they're displayed, overlaid on the regions in the MT view?
They are seen this way when you have the Entry Name displayed (from the Multitrack menu) by default, or by preference.

The names don't automatically display in the mixer views unless you've entered names in the Track/Channel label area in the MT view.

yes. RadioAd_Country.edl is displayed by default, but others are not displayed (is it a question of how the track is written? Do I need to manually write these tracks?, and if there are 40-60 of them.

I think by "Filenames" Dell means track/channel names.

I've never been able to name a channel through a mixer view in SAW - In SAC, sure - but the only place I've ever been able to name a channel is from the MT.

Tried just now, too, and it's a no-go for me.

1. [Left-Clicking] in the Label Display zone displays a track label dialog box, allowing a name for the track to be entered. You must press the [Enter] key or click the OK button on the title bar for the name to be accepted.
2. [Ctrl-Left-Clicking] in the Label Display zone allows you to enter labels for sequential tracks. Pressing the [Enter] key or clicking the OK button on the title bar after a label name has been entered will automatically prompt for a label name for the next track. To close or cancel the label dialog box, [Left-Click] either the close button or outside of the box, or press the [Esc] key.
3. Track labels may be entered even while playback is active. If record meters are open, the engine must be stopped to enter labels due to the already opened and linked record files.

In addition, when the track-label is populated with a name, it becomes part of filenames that are subsequently recorded. A handy trick when doing punch-ins is changing the track-names even by one characters. This will prevent you from being able to damage a previous recording, as the newly recorded material is in a now in a different file rather than appending the original if you do something like an accidental retake-all, or an undo while in record mode.

It sounds like you are importing wav files. If so, the file names are displayed on the multitrack waveform display - not the track label. The track label is not associated with the file name (unless it is recorded on that track, in which case it is part of the basis for automatically generated filenames of newly recorded material).

It is the track label that propagates to the other views. That must be entered manually (at least initially - although it saves with certain templates).

This lets you do it pretty quick.

One thing I noticed is there are widely different ways people use this software. And lots of different workflows. One man's shortcoming is another's advantage, so something like track-labeling is just the way it is.

For what you are doing (which I don't do often) I rename the audio files G1_rhythm, G2_ lead... and then library import them into the multitrack en-masse. They sort alphabetically then number-select groups (now in order) and apply textures - green for guitars...

That makes it easy to name the tracks - but I wouldn't want to use use the file names. Who cares? ...saw keeps track of that - and not many characters that fit into the display - but something like this would be meaningful: G_RL_C - which equals (to me) guitar_rhythm_left_chorus.

Well...importing 40-60 wav files into MT, all track names has to be filled in manually in MT track label.
I have done it, not 60 but 20 wav files, one have to just make plenty of coffee and it is done he, he.
Anyway here are nice multitrack files if it is of interest:

Ideas:

1) Create a session template with all your most-commonly-used track/channel labels. Or a few templates for different session types.

2) Create a macro that transfers names to the MT or a mixer view from a list of WAV files in File Explorer or lines of text in a text document.

3) Just type in the freaking labels for each project. How tough can it be?
