Line Inputs (not mic pre's) needed

Post by IraSeigel »

For 2 of the groups I regularly mix - the Fixx and Sheena Easton - I'm finding I need as many or more line level inputs as I do mic inputs.

With my Octamic, AD8000 Behringer and Fireface 800, I have more than enough mic pre's. What I need is 8-10 (or more) line level inputs - for wireless mic inputs (don't need mic preamps, I don't think), bass and keys DIs, track playback (Sheena Easton only), etc.

Can you give me some suggestions as to how to add to my SAC rig with 1 or 2 units of line inputs, with Lightpipe out? (Or other output, but please explain.)

Much thanks,
Ira

Hello,

Appogee, Frontier Audio and Alesis all have made units that do what you want. There were others as well, but these come up on ebay fairly cheap occasionally.
The Frontier was my choice - no extra un-needed frills and sounded better than the Alesis

info on the Tango http://www.frontierdesign.com/Products/Tango24
Info on the Alesis http://www.kellyindustries.com/computer/alesis_ai3.html

- of course a really cheap alternative would be to just use an ADAT and use it only for the line level ad/da. ADATs are selling for pennies these days.

Actually the Alesis XT had pretty decent converters, which I think sounded a little better than the AI-3 which was based on the older ADAT electronics.

The Behringers work for me, but if your shop around and cost is not that much of an issues, the one I was looking at was the Motu HD192. A 12in / 12 out PCI or the Motu 24i/o Image

. Both need the a PCI card (sold separately) . But just a straight line level interface would be a tough one to find. Everyone is building the with some sort of mic preS.

With the Behringers, get a 1k sinewave generator, something that can send it out to the Behr's TRS at +3, set SAW up so it reads the same and Duct tape the knobs. Works for me :D .
